Prof. Dr. Sven Biscop (b. 1976) completed his degree in political sciences/public administration at Universiteit Ghent, where he won the best thesis award for his work on European security and defence policy. He then gained the Paul-Henri Spaak Ph.D. scholarship from the Fund for Scientific Research, which he held from 1999 to 2002.
He is Director of the Security and Global Governance Programme at Egmont Institute, a think tank associated with the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His research focuses on the foreign, security and defence policy of the European Union.
Sven is a Visiting Professor for European security at the College of Europe in Bruges and at Universiteit Ghent. He has also lectured at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Université de Liège, and has been a visiting professor at Renmin University in Beijing and Carleton University in Ottawa.
On behalf of Egmont Institute, Sven is co-director of Higher Studies in Security and Defence, a course for security practitioners organised in collaboration with the Belgian Royal High Institute for Defence, and sits on the Executive Academic Board of the European Union’s European Security and Defence College. He is also a member of the Scientific Councils of the Flemish Peace Institute and the Centre d’Etudes en Sciences sociales de la Défense.
Sven is editor in chief of Studia Diplomatica and the Egmont Papers; member of the board of the Flemish United Nations Association; foreign languages book review editor of European Foreign Affairs Review; and member of the editorial board for Internationale Spectator and European Security.
